Actualism and possible worlds

چکیده
THE IDEA of possible worlds has both promised and, I believe, delivered understanding and insight in a wide range of topics. Pre-eminent here, I think, is the topic of broadly logical possibility, both de &to and de re. But there are others: the nature of propositions, properties, and sets; the function of proper names and definite descriptions; the nature of counterfactuals; time and temporal relations; causal determinism; in philosophical theology, the ontological argument, theological determinism, and the problem of evil (see [7], chapters IV-X). In one respect, however, the idea of possible worlds may seem to have contributed less to clarity than to confusion; for if we take this idea seriously, we may find outselves committed to the dubious notion that there are or could have been things that do not exist. Let me explain.

Worlds and Times
There are many parallels between the role of possible worlds in modal logic and that of times in tense logic. But the similarities only go so far, and it is important to note where the two come apart. This paper argues that even though worlds and times play similar roles in the model theories of modal and tense logic, there is no tense analogue of the possible-worlds analysis of modal operators...
متن کاملModel theory for modal logic - Part III existence and predication
This paper is concerned with the technical implications of a certain view connecting existence to predication. This is the view that in no possible world is there a genuine relation among the nonexistents of that world or between the nonexistents and the existents! The meaning of the term ‘genuine’ here may be variously explained. On an extreme interpretation, all relations are ‘genuine’, so th...
متن کاملA Defense of Actualist Realism∗
In this paper, the authors argue that there is a version of actualist realism about possible worlds and possible individuals that is immune to the difficulties raised for this view in Divers 2002. We show that object theory, as a form of actualist realism, provides a general theory of modality that is at least as good as genuine realism but without the commitment to possible worlds in David
متن کاملTimes in Tense Logic
Tense logic is often said to possess insufficient expressive resources to serve as a theory of the nature of time. This paper counters this objection by showing how to obtain quantification over times in a tense logic in which all temporal distinctions are ultimately spelled out in terms of the two simple tense operators “it was the case that” and “it will be the case that.” This account of tim...
متن کاملWhat in the world are the ways things might have been ?
Robert Stalnaker is an actualist who holds that merely possible worlds are uninstantiated properties that might have been instantiated. Stalnaker also holds that there are no metaphysically impossible worlds: uninstantiated properties that couldn’t have been instantiated. These views motivate Stalnaker’s ‘‘two dimensional’’ account of the necessary a posteriori on which there is no single propo...
